I’ve lost count of the amount of times that I’ve been to Dungeness in the last couple of years, but it seems that every time I go you can always get a new angle of either the sunset or the Milky Way.
It sometimes takes a bit of imagination but nine times out of ten I have managed to come back with something fresh.
Prospect cottage has been popular over the years with professional photographers and models. I need to do a quick Google search but from what I’ve heard in the past the owners now ensure that if you want to use it on the actual site, you have to get permission or some kind of permit for a professional/commercial shoot.
On this occasion, knowing that the sun sets over land, I thought that I would shoot the cottage with its unique yellow window frames, as it would set off nicely against the sun. The last sunset I photographed here was next to the power station.
My recent purchase, the sigma 150 to 600 mm lens gave me the opportunity to shoot from approximately half a mile away. I couldn’t have gone much further otherwise I would’ve been in the sea. Well, I guess that if I had my trunks on me - it would have been plausible :-)
One day I will write a post about why I like to shoot from such a distance, but in short - the further away you are from the desired subject, the smaller it will be in comparison to the Sun.
The photo attached to this post is a frame from a timelapse that I shall upload soon. The cottage itself was more of a dark silhouette when I took this exposure frame as I had to bring the exposure down to not blow out the Sun in the timelapse.
Once the timelapse shoot was finished, I took an additional shot with a longer exposure time to bring out the detail in the cottage. I then blended the two shots, ensuring that I didn’t make the cottage too bright otherwise it would’ve looked artificial.
This picture so far has been one of the most popular uploads that I’ve had in a while so I must have got the balance okay :)
I’ve also uploaded a mini reel from my Instagram below.
